Welcome to the Weekly Agitator: who and what you should be angry at, who and where people are organizing about it, and how you can find out more

Local Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) put County Executive Ike Leggett back on his heels at his final annual budget forum presentation.

Questions covered themes such as transparency, accountability, revolving doors, and who will ultimately be left with the bill — Amazon or us.

Leggett countered that no deal-making was being conducted with Amazon, and if/when such deals were being made the public would have input. This is a weak answer given the stories linked-to above, not to mention the ideologically-motivated Hogan administration at the state level propagating their “open for business” line.

But Leggett’s second answer was a more clear display of his intent to bow to Amazon’s demands He cited Amazon-propaganda declaring 50,000 new jobs would come to Montgomery County, and claimed this will off-set the tax revenue lost in the national bipartisan project to shrink and privatise the federal government. Ike dismissed the studies County Council At-Large candidate Brandy Brooks referenced when demanding whether his administration was even questioning the benefits propagated by Amazon’s HQ2 development team.

Another question asked by a DSA protestor about managing gentrification cause by Amazon was called “stupid” by Ike. He backtracked his earlier claims, the county was not preparing for 50,000 new people to immigrate. This immediately calls into question how the Amazon deal will be paid and by whom, as well as the deal’s impact on our already volatile housing market. Not to mention the lack of an answer to any county programs effectively combating existing or future gentrification.

Maryland may finally give women a legal way to terminate the parental rights of a rapist The effort long championed by Del. Kathleen M. Dumais (D-Montgomery) is being sent to be signed into law by Gov. Hogan.

Last year, the bill died in the final days of the Legislative session, after facing serious public scrutiny that it was an appointed board of all men who aided the bill’s death. https://marylandmatters.org/2018/02/08/measure-taking-away-rapists-parental-rights-heading-to-hogans-desk/

State Level Sick Leave Bill Delayed: Choose when to be Sick Accordingly

Be advised that the State Senate Finance Committee, led by Charles County Democrat Sen. Thomas M. Middleton, has passed a delay measure to slow the implementation of Maryland’s recently passed Paid Sick Leave bill. Whether it will pass the House remains to be seen.

In the meantime, please insure you don’t get sick and have to account for working while ill. Tell the same to your friends, family, and loved ones.

Business owners are encouraged to use this delay to further plan how to 1) not abide by the spirit or letter of this law 2) further undermine it with other legislative measures 3) not plan at all how to restructure their business in a way to accommodate the human body’s pesky habit of getting sick due to overwork, environmental factors/pollution, psychological distress, or having their workers’ children be sick.
